Microneedling for Acne Scars: Does It Actually Work?
Microneedling can significantly improve the appearance of acne scars by triggering the skin's own collagen production, but results depend on scar type, skin condition, and doing a proper course of treatment rather than a single session. It won't work on active inflamed acne, and it isn't the right tool for every scar type.
At EpidermFx, treatment is carried out using a Dermapen — a motorised, medical-grade microneedling device that allows precise depth control.
Here's what it actually does, who it suits, and what a realistic treatment plan looks like.
How does microneedling help acne scarring?
A motorised microneedling device (EpidermFx uses a Dermapen) uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This triggers the body's wound-healing response: new collagen and elastin form in the treated area over the following weeks, which gradually fills and smooths the depressed tissue that makes up most acne scarring.
It's a mechanical, controlled-injury treatment rather than a chemical or light-based one, which is why depth control matters more here than almost any other treatment in the clinic.
More trauma does not mean more collagen. Erythema (redness) can be the right endpoint for milder texture concerns, while deeper scars may need pinpoint bleeding to respond.
But excessive bleeding is not a marker of a better treatment, and unnecessary trauma raises the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly on skin that pigments easily.

Does microneedling work for every type of acne scar?
No — and this is the most common misunderstanding people bring into a consultation.
Rolling scars (broad, shallow depressions with sloped edges) tend to respond well to microneedling, since the collagen remodelling smooths gradual contour changes effectively.
Boxcar scars (defined edges, box-like depression) respond partially — microneedling can soften them, but deeper boxcar scarring often needs it combined with another modality.
Ice-pick scars (narrow, deep, pitted) respond the least to microneedling alone. These typically need a different approach first, such as TCA CROSS, with microneedling used afterwards to refine overall texture.
Choosing a treatment based on what's trending rather than your actual scar type is the single biggest reason people are disappointed with results.
A proper assessment identifies which scar types you have, most people have a mix, before any treatment plan is built.
Is microneedling safe for acne-prone skin?
Yes, with an important condition: it should not be performed over active inflammatory acne, pustules, open lesions, infection, or otherwise compromised skin. Needling active breakouts can spread bacteria and worsen inflammation rather than improve scarring.
If you have current active acne alongside old scarring, the acne needs to be brought under control first, often with a topical routine, before microneedling is appropriate.
How many sessions will I need?
For acne scarring, a course of 4 to 6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart is standard. Collagen remodelling is gradual, so results build progressively rather than appearing after one appointment — spacing sessions any closer doesn't speed this up and increases the risk of irritation.
Maintenance sessions every few months can help sustain results, particularly for skin that also shows fine lines or enlarged pore appearance alongside scarring.
How much does microneedling cost?
Single session: £185
4-session course: £650 (saving £90 versus paying per session)
6-session course: £950 (saving £160 versus paying per session) — the fuller course tends to suit acne scarring specifically, since scar remodelling responds best to sustained treatment rather than one-off sessions

Because acne scarring needs a course to show meaningful change, the 6-session package is the better starting point for scarring rather than general texture or fine lines — a single session is really for people testing the treatment or targeting a specific event.
What does recovery look like?
Expect redness for 24–48 hours, similar to mild sunburn, with the possibility of light pinpoint bleeding on deeper passes. Most people return to normal activities the next day, though makeup is usually avoided for 24 hours.
What should I use on my skin around treatment?
In the days before and after, your skin needs to be calm and free of active irritants — no retinoids, strong acids or physical exfoliants immediately either side of a session.
Afterwards, a gentle barrier-supporting moisturiser and daily SPF matter more than any "active" product; new collagen forming under freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to UV-triggered pigmentation.
Between sessions, the right home routine actually determines how well your results hold this is usually where medical-grade formulations make a measurable difference over high-street options, both in what they contain and in how consistently they're dosed.
Ask Ivanna and we'll build your between-session routine around your specific scar type during consultation with our selection of medical grade skincare options.
Why have microneedling at EpidermFx?
Every microneedling plan at EpidermFx starts with identifying scar type, skin tolerance and any active acne before treatment begins — led by Ivanna Glover, a trained Ukrainian pharmacist with a background in pharmaceutical and medical sciences. Needling depth and passes are adjusted to your skin rather than applied as a standard protocol.
The clinic is at 21 Main Street, Bothwell, close to Uddingston, Hamilton, Motherwell and Glasgow.
The same Dermapen technology is also used at EpidermFx for scalp microneedling to support hair loss treatment — [read how that works here] if thinning hair is a concern alongside your skin.
Frequently asked questions
Is microneedling better than chemical peels for acne scars?
Neither is universally "better" — they work differently. Peels resurface the top layer of skin, while microneedling stimulates deeper collagen remodelling. Many treatment plans use both at different stages.
Can I have microneedling if I still get occasional breakouts?
Active, inflamed lesions in the treatment area need to be avoided on the day, but occasional breakouts elsewhere don't rule out treatment. This is assessed at consultation.
Will microneedling make my pores bigger?
No. Done correctly, it typically improves the appearance of enlarged pores over a course rather than worsening them.
How soon will I see results?
Some texture improvement is visible within a few weeks as collagen begins remodelling, but full results from a course typically take 3–6 months to fully develop.
Is it cheaper to book a package or pay per session?
Yes — the 6-session course saves £160 versus paying per session (£950 vs £1,110), and the 4-session course saves £90 (£650 vs £740). Since acne scarring needs a full course to see results, the package is the more cost-effective way to book.
