Microneedling for Hair Loss: How It Works and What to Expect
Medical scalp microneedling uses the same controlled micro-injury principle as facial microneedling, but applied to the scalp — creating tiny channels that stimulate blood flow, trigger localised collagen production, and significantly improve how well topical hair-loss treatments are absorbed.
It's most effective for androgenetic (pattern) hair loss and is usually combined with an active topical, rather than used as a standalone fix. At EpidermFx in Bothwell, it's £120 per session.
How does microneedling work for hair loss?
The device creates fine, controlled punctures across the scalp. This does three things: it increases local blood flow to hair follicles, it triggers a mild wound-healing response that releases growth factors, and, importantly, it creates temporary micro-channels that dramatically increase the absorption of anything applied to the scalp afterwards, such as minoxidil or peptide-based scalp serums.
The absorption effect is a large part of why it's often paired with a topical rather than used alone. Minoxidil applied to intact skin penetrates poorly; applied immediately after microneedling, penetration is substantially higher.
Does microneedling actually regrow hair?
The evidence is strongest for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss in both men and women), particularly when microneedling is combined with an active topical treatment rather than used by itself.
It is not a treatment for scarring alopecia, active scalp infection, or hair loss with an undiagnosed underlying cause — those need medical assessment first, not microneedling.
It's also not an instant fix. Hair growth cycles are slow, so meaningful change is measured in months, not weeks.

Is scalp microneedling painful?
Most people find it more tolerable than they expect — the scalp has fewer nerve endings in some areas than the face, though sensitivity varies by person and by area treated. A numbing approach can be discussed at consultation if you're needle-anxious.
How many sessions will I need?
A course of monthly sessions, alongside consistent use of a topical at home, is the standard approach for pattern hair loss — this is a maintenance-style treatment rather than a fix-and-forget one, similar to how minoxidil itself needs ongoing use to sustain results.
How much does microneedling for hair loss cost?
Single session: £120
Three sessions: £340
What should I do around a session?
Avoid strong topical actives on the scalp for 24 hours before a session. Afterwards, your scalp will be more receptive to absorption — this is the window to apply minoxidil or another prescribed topical, and generally the best time to start or restart a consistent routine if you've been inconsistent with one.
Why have microneedling for hair loss at EpidermFx?
The same Dermapen technology used for acne scarring on the face is used here on the scalp — the principle is identical, but the goal, depth and technique are adapted for hair follicles rather than skin texture.
Every plan is built by Ivanna Glover, a trained Ukrainian pharmacist with a background in pharmaceutical and medical sciences, so the topical side of your routine is chosen with the same rigour as the in-clinic treatment.
The clinic is at 21 Main Street, Bothwell, close to Uddingston, Hamilton, Motherwell and Glasgow.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use microneedling for hair loss without minoxidil or another topical?
You can, but results are generally weaker. The combination of mechanical stimulation and improved topical absorption is where the evidence is strongest — used alone, microneedling is a smaller lever.
Is scalp microneedling suitable for women as well as men?
Yes. Pattern hair loss affects both, and the treatment approach is the same, though the topical recommended may differ.
How soon will I see results?
Typically 3–6 months of consistent treatment and topical use before meaningful change is visible — hair growth cycles don't move faster than that regardless of the treatment used.
Can scalp microneedling be combined with facial microneedling or BioRePeel in the same visit?
This is assessed individually, but treating different areas in one visit is often possible — ask at consultation or when booking.
Is it cheaper to book the 3-session course than pay per session?
Yes. Three single sessions would cost £360; the 3-session course is £340, a £20 saving and since hair loss treatment needs consistency over months rather than a one-off visit, the course is the more realistic way to book from the start.
This article is general skincare education and not a personal diagnosis or treatment plan. Hair loss can have several underlying causes and it's worth having yours properly assessed before starting any treatment.
